Guide: Set up custom taxes and fees

Whether you’re a restaurant owner or run a retail store, you are responsible for collecting taxes and fees. As a business owner in Canada, you are required to collect sales taxes if you provide taxable products and services and you make $30,000 in revenue in any quarter of the year.


So, before you start taking payments, set up your taxes and fees so that your customers are automatically charged the right amounts for based on your regional requirements. Follow our 8-step guide to easily set up taxes and fees on your Clover device.

Add rates for taxes and fees

On your web dashboard

  1. On a web browser, log into your Clover account.
  2. On the bottom left navigation, select Account & Set Up.
  3. Under Business Operations, select Taxes & Fees.
  4. Select Add Tax Rate or Flat Fee.
  5. Enter a name for the tax or fee.
  6. Select an option:
    ○ For a tax, choose Tax Percentage and enter the tax rate.
    ○ For a fee, choose Flat Fee and enter the fee amount.
  7. (Optional) Select Default to apply this tax or fee to all items with default taxes and fees turned on. The tax will then be automatically charged at check out.
  8. Click Save

Edit your tax rate, tax percentage, fee amount or flat fee at any time by logging back into your Web Dashboard. You can also delete tax rates, if required.

Add tax exemption rules for specific items

If you do business in an area with special tax laws for certain items, you can create exemption rules for taxes and fees so that they are automatically excluded if you select a certain order type. Customize your tax rules in your Dashboard in 8 easy steps.

  1. On a web browser, log into your Clover account.
  2. Select Account & Setup.
  3. Under Business Operations, select Taxes & Fees.
  4. Select Rules by Order Type.
  5. Select Create Exemption Rule.
  6. Type in a name for your tax or fee rule.
  7. Create your tax or fee rule using the dropdown menus:
    ● Use the Select an Order Type dropdown menu and select the order type to apply the tax or fee rule.
    ● Use the Select Tax Rates or Fees dropdown menu and select the checkboxes next to the tax rates or fees you want to exempt.
  8. (Optional) Select Items to designate specific items to apply the tax or fee exemption rule.
  9. Select Done.
  10. Select Save.
